Richard Shaw exalts mundane objects through assemblages of meticulously executed ceramic sculptures. Untitled (Us Mail package) maintains the carefully constructed trompe-l’oeil technique for which Shaw is best known. This slip-cast and assembled still life challenges material preconceptions and introduces visual puns, satirical commentary, and sometimes a sense of the absurd. The seemingly sturdy box labeled “book rate” in large script, bound with twine and balancing metal scissors is actually a delicate, hollow ceramic box.
